If you can remember back to the very early years of World War II, almost every town and village displayed the Automobile Association circular plates in the centre of the village indicating its name, the distance to the nearest village, town and London. These were hastily removed when the threat of invasion loomed and at the end of the war very few were replaced, most of them having gone towards the scrap drive. |
